Humza Yousaf officially elected Scotland’s new first minister as Forbes leaves government

Humza Yousaf has been officially elected as Scotland’s new first minister after he was backed by a majority of MSPs.

Following his victory in the SNP leadership race yesterday, the 37-year-old won a vote at Holyrood to confirm him as Nicola Sturgeon’s successor – helped by support of the Scottish Greens.

But the scale of the challenge he faces in bringing the party together after a fractious leadership contest became apparent this evening when his main rival for the leadership – Kate Forbes – turned down a demotion. She will now return to the backbenches but says Yousaf has her full support.
